PowerGym - Harvesting Electricity from Gym Workouts

PowerGym is a concept for harvesting electricity from the mechanical effort people already expend during exercise, so that gyms and fitness spaces double as small-scale power generators. Two harvesting mechanisms were proposed: a piezoelectric path, where flooring and treadmill surfaces made of piezoelectric material convert the vibration of footsteps directly into electric charge, and a mechanical path, where the linear motion of gym equipment (pull-down machines, chest press machines, leg-adduction machines, cycles, treadmills) is converted to rotational motion via a crankshaft, driving a turbine and a generator. In both cases, the resulting DC output is stepped up through a boost converter and stored in lithium or lead battery packs for later use.
Based on figures reported in the literature, piezoelectric flooring can generate on the order of 7 kWh/day across about 2400 sq ft of foot traffic, while a single stationary bike can produce roughly 100 watts/hr, enough for one person cycling regularly to save about Tk 120 a month. The poster argues that the concept is feasible with existing technology, since turbine generators are already widely used and piezoelectric flooring could be introduced gradually starting with high-traffic gyms, and frames its impact around incentivizing fitness: since people already need to expend mechanical effort to stay healthy, capturing that otherwise-wasted energy turns a leisure activity into a small, sustainable contribution to the energy supply.
